About Billie Edrington

Educational Aspirations and How This Scholarship Will Help Me Achieve Them As a young, self-employed Black woman and licensed cosmetologist, I’ve always been driven by creativity, independence, and a deep desire to empower others through beauty and self-expression. Owning and operating my own salon has been a long-standing dream of mine—one that goes beyond styling hair to building a space where clients feel confident, seen, and celebrated. While my hands-on experience and entrepreneurial spirit have helped me begin laying the foundation, I’ve come to realize that passion alone is not enough. To truly succeed and grow a sustainable business, I need formal education in business operations, management, and finance. I am currently entering my final two semesters at Cuyahoga Community College, where I am pursuing my associate degree with the goal of transferring to a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree in business. This next phase of my education is essential. It will equip me with the knowledge and skills to confidently manage budgets, develop marketing strategies, understand legal structures, and create long-term growth plans for my future salon. Winning this scholarship would significantly lighten the financial burden of my last two semesters, allowing me to focus fully on my studies while continuing to work part-time in my field. As someone who is funding her own education while running a small business, every bit of support helps me stay on track and one step closer to achieving my dream. This scholarship is more than just financial assistance—it’s an investment in my future, my community, and my ability to create opportunities for others. With the right education and support, I plan to open a salon that not only provides exceptional service but also creates jobs, mentorships, and a safe, uplifting environment for other aspiring beauty professionals. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students who are determined to turn their goals into reality.
